Project 2115

Chapter 12 : The Coming of Resolve

Kai reappeared in the living room, now resembling a young warrior ready for battle. Peter and Anne looked at him with a mix of pride and fear. Peter offered a gentle nod of approval, “You look ready, son.”

As they were preparing their belongings, the television was casting a dim light in the room, and Lisa from WBZ started speaking, “Folks, we’re doing our best to keep you updated with the most recent information. The situation is continuously evolving. It’s crucial to stay vigilant and prioritize your safety.”

Tom, Lisa’s co-anchor, continued, “That’s right, Lisa. And speaking of safety, we’ve received reports of several secure locations being set up as shelters. Notably, the Encore Boston Harbor Casino in Everett is currently serving as a sanctuary for survivors. The place is fortified and guarded. If you can safely reach there, we advise you to do so.”

The ticker at the bottom of the screen read: “SAFETY SHELTERS: Everett – Encore Boston Harbor Casino, Cambridge – Harvard University Stadium, Medford – Tufts University Gymnasium…”

Anne looked at the screen, then back to Peter and Kai, “Are we ready to make this journey?” she asked, her voice steady but her eyes betraying her fear.

Peter put an arm around her, giving a reassuring squeeze, “We’ll stick together, stay vigilant, and get there safely,” he affirmed, “We have to.”

Kai, gripping his bokken, chimed in with newfound determination, “Yeah, we’ve got this!” but his mind began to wonder as he looked down at his bokken.

As the family prepared one more stay before they leave the safety of their home, Kai found himself lost in thought. Holding his bokken, he was suddenly struck by the gravity of the situation. He had used this weapon countless times before, but always in the controlled environment of his Kendo classes. The idea of using it not for sport, but for survival, was a concept he had never imagined having to confront.

He looked down at the wooden sword in his hands, the familiar weight suddenly feeling much heavier. Thoughts raced through his mind, a whirlwind of doubts and fears. He had sparred with friends, yes, but this was different. These weren’t friends, they weren’t even people anymore. They were Z’s. But was he ready to face them? Was he ready to use his bokken not just to score points, but to protect himself and his family?

He thought about the sport he loved, the discipline and respect it taught him, and how it was grounded in the principles of balance, focus, and control. Could he apply these same principles now, in this dire situation?

His determination wavered as he considered these questions. The weight of his responsibility to protect himself and his parents felt crushing. A bead of sweat trickled down his forehead as his grip tightened around the handle of his bokken.

Suddenly, he was pulled from his internal struggle by the sound of his parents’ voices. He took a deep breath, trying to still the turmoil within him.

“Kai, are you ready?” his father called out.

His hesitation was clear in his silence. But he knew he had no other choice. Survival was not a matter of choice. It was a necessity.

“Yes,” he responded, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’m ready.”

His words were for his parents, but more than that, they were for himself. He needed to believe he was ready. He needed to believe he could do this. And so, with his bokken in hand and his resolve hardening, Kai stepped into a world that was no longer familiar, a world where he would have to fight to survive and this his last night home.
